When I was in Khmelnitskyi in 2017
I was put up after my show
at an artists' compound,
sort of residency, retreat
out in the rural area outside the town.
And I had planned on going to
Odessa the next day.
That's where my... some people in my family were from
before they came to New York
around the beginning of the 20th century.
and I wanted to go to Odessa the next day after my show in Khmelnitskyi
So i woke up in the morning and planned on walking
from the compound
which was quite a ways away from anything else
and quite a ways away from the town center
walking from there to the town to get a bus to Odessa.
And then, from Odessa go to Kyiv, where I would play
a final show with WBBB. And
so I started talking out the compound at around 10 in the morning
and walked for a couple of hours
until I got to the place where the country road
met the larger road that joined up at, like, a gas station
that would bring me to Khmelnitskyi
then i would hitchhike on that larger road to Khmelnitskyi
But right at the corner of the country road,
and the larger road,
my friend showed up.
And he said, "You can't go into Khmelnitskyy
to get a bus to Odessa, because we gotta hang out."
And picked me up in the car and drove me back to the compound
where we had been –– where I had been staying, and
Finally got some beers and took them out on this little lake
that was near the compound
And, my friends there took good care of me,
and also gave me the gift of an excuse
to go back to Odessa next time I go.
So, thank you for that.
