Yesterday I climbed up a hill near my home to record this piece, and I chose this particular hill for a reason. At the top there's the remains of an old world war two anti aircraft battery. The guns that were once housed in those concrete bunkers never fired in anger, but the symbolism of the place, not to mention the amazing sonic possibilities of the concrete walls – well it all just seemed somehow appropriate. So I recorded something philosophically trite and moved on with my day. Job done.
Then last night I watched an interview with the man who lost his entire family as they were trying to escape Russian shelling, and the whole horrible event recorded for posterity on camera. There was even an image of his family lying on a pavement that made the front cover of the New York Times. And as I watched this man calmly explain his story, how he'd left his family behind to visit his elderly mother in the east who was ill with COVID, and wasn't able to return. How he'd tracked his wife on google, her last point of contact was a hospital. I watched this, and everything I'd intended to say just dissolved into dust.
I had no words. That one video took them all away.

The only thing I can say to fill the void is that, no matter what happens next, please know that what distinguishes us from the monsters that perpetrate these horrors is our understanding of humanity – the very essence of who we are.

A wonderful musical collection that shows the unity of the whole world and the support of Ukraine during the long war, which will undoubtedly end with the victory of Ukraine. And now the terrible numbers... Only according to official data as of today #russiaisaterroriststate killed 510 children in Ukraine, injured another 1141 children, kidnapped 19546 children. There are many more unofficial victims. And russia remains a member of the UN... desynkro303

Sonic Youth is one of those bands where you easily run out of superlatives to describe what they created. This could've easily come off as a cynical cash-grab by a band that had broken up 11 years prior to the release of this record, but that's not what this is. Some of my favourite Sonic Youth instrumentals. sentient meat
